Ukraine’s presidential adviser, Mihilo Podolak, said Ukraine had “lost control” of the Chernobyl plant, the Associated Press reported.
“The Ukrainian authorities do not know the current state of the facilities in Chernobyl, the site of the world’s worst nuclear disaster,” he added..
“After the futile attack of the Russians in this direction, it is impossible to say that the Chernobyl nuclear power plant is safe,” he added.
Earlier on Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Russian forces were trying to seize the Chernobyl plant, pointing out that Ukrainian soldiers “sacrific their lives to prevent a second Chernobyl disaster.”
A nuclear reactor exploded at the plant, 130 kilometers north of the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, in April 1986, releasing radioactive waste across Europe..
The explosive reactor was covered with a protective cover several years ago, to prevent radioactive leakage.
