As reported on CNN, the international organization will take extreme care in its use so that the iodine ends up being absorbed by the thyroid. BBC News Health editor, James Gallagher, explains that this type of pill reduces the damage that radiation causes in the body after a nuclear accident.

When there are explosions in nuclear power plants or reactors, radioactive iodine is released that concentrates in the thyroid gland of people and this causes damage to their tissues.
