The United Kingdom government announced this Tuesday (8) sanctions against Russia over accusations of using chemical weapons in the war against Ukraine.
According to information from the BBC, the sanctions, which include blocking assets and banning entry into the United Kingdom, affect the military personnel of the Chemical, Biological and Radiological Defense, a division of the Russian Ministry of Defense, and its commander, Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov .
Two Russian Ministry of Defense laboratories were also designated by the British government due to “supporting the development and implementation of these inhumane weapons for use on the front lines”.
The British Foreign Office added that Kirillov is also a “significant spokesperson for[s campanhas de] Kremlin disinformation.”
The portfolio holder, David Lammy, stated that the United Kingdom would not “stand idly by while [o ditador russo, Vladimir] Putin and his mafia state trample international law, including the Chemical Weapons Convention [CWC, na sigla em inglês]”.
In May, the American State Department accused Russian forces of having used chloropicrin, a liquid used as a pest neutralizer and which in humans attacks the lungs and acts as tear gas, with lethal effects.
In coordination with the US Treasury Department, the State Department imposed sanctions against three Russian government entities associated with the country’s chemical and biological weapons programs and four Russian companies that provide support to these entities.
