Jennifer Robinson sued the British government for spying and sharing information with the US
Lawyer Jennifer Robinson, who is part of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange’s legal team, said she reached an agreement with the UK government after this “admit” that, by spying on and sharing information about her with the United States, would have violated her rights.
Robinson filed a lawsuit against the British government in 2016. It was tried by the European Court of Human Rights. Here’s the intact of the decision (150 KB).
“In 2016 I took legal action against the UK with @privacyint over surveillance and information sharing with the US – given my work as a lawyer for #Assange and @wikileaks. The UK admits violation of Art 8 and Art 10 (confidential journalistic material)”wrote the lawyer on her Twitter profile.
She accused the British government of spying. In the settlement, the UK said there were reasonable grounds for her to claim she was being spied on.
In the document shared by the lawyer, there is an agreement between her and the British government. According to the letter, the United Kingdom must compensate her in 1,000 euros, equivalent to R$ 5,250 according to the current quotation, referring to the costs and expenses incurred by the lawyer. The value must be converted into British pounds.
Assange case
Assange faces at least 18 criminal charges. Among them are violations of the espionage law and conspiracy to break into US government computers. He published more than 700,000 confidential US military and diplomatic documents.
The WikiLeaks founder lived more than 7 years in the Ecuadorian embassy in London. When Ecuador withdrew his right to political asylum, Assange was arrested by the British authorities and has been serving his sentence for two years in a maximum security penitentiary.
In January of last year, the Westminster Magistrates Court denied Assange’s extradition on the grounds that there was a risk of suicide. But in April of this year, the UK Supreme Court issued an extradition order against him to the US.
