The Madrid City Council has awarded the Sevillian engineering company UG21, in a joint venture with Cemosa and TPF, the contract for technical assistance to the construction management for the control and surveillance of the execution works of the Southwest Green Walk (Undergrounding of the A-5-Paseo de Extremadura) for an amount of 4.3 million euros and a period of 30 months. Specifically, the UTE has been awarded Lot 1, of the two that comprise the project. In total, the works have a budget around 400 million of euros, including the surface development above the tunnel.
UG21, the company indicates in a statement, is currently the fourth Andalusian engineering largest and one of the five most internationalized in the country (80% of its business comes from outside Spain). In 2023 it began operations in Nicaragua and inaugurated a second headquarters in Mexico. The company already had permanent offices in Colombia, Peru, Costa Rica and a first office in Mexico, together with Seville and Madrid in the national territory.
The Green Walk
The new contract won in Madrid affects the Paseo Verde del Suroeste, which will promote the recovery for the city of more than three kilometers without gaps between the neighborhoods of Lucero, Aluche and Las Águilason one side, and those of Camp and Country Houseon the other, separated since 1968 by the A-5, a highway that 80,000 vehicles cross daily. Covering the A-5 will continue the pedestrianized boulevard of Avenida de Portugal to the area around Avenida Padre Piquer, in the Latina district, for a total of 3.2 kilometers.
The action includes two phases, a first from Padre Piquer to Batánwhich includes a new roundabout on Avenida de los Poblados; and a second part between Batán and Avenida de Portugalwhich will include, among other interventions, the connection with the existing tunnel on this last avenue.
For the neighborhood, the project will result in a green urban landscape, with a 90% reduction in vehicle traffic on the surface, which will imply a significant reduction in polluting emissions. Pedestrian mobility in public transport and on roads will also be improved, as well as in road safety in the environment, resolving traffic jam problems in connections such as Paseo de Extremadura, Batán and Boadilla.
Consolidation
With this award, UG21 continues to take steps in fulfilling the 2025 Strategic Plan, which is allowing it to climb positions in the ranking of the main Spanish groups dedicated to engineering for construction, building and civil works consulting. The Sevillian firm has risen to position 37 compared to the 44th position it occupied 12 months earlier, a milestone that occurs after achieving historic figures in 2023, a year in which billed 13 million euros, 60% more.
This percentage increase is the largest among all the companies that make up the top 50 of the sector and whose average rebound was around 9% compared to 2022, according to the classification prepared annually by Alimarket.
