Uber has had a definitive suspension granted by a federal judge almost a year ago and which remains in effect, allowing its driver partners to make trips from any airport in the country, without requiring a special permit or authorization, said Juan Pablo Eiroa, General Director of Uber in Mexico.
In an interview, he said that for the past five years the firm has attempted various legal actions with favorable results.
“Currently, we have an amparo action in progress, and the resolution of the appeal for review is pending,” he said. He explained that the definitive suspension achieved in October 2023 is part of this amparo process, the final review of which depends on the Judiciary, which is still on strike.
He stressed that since airports are the gateway to the country and the first impression received by millions of foreign tourists, it is vitally important for Mexico that visitors and people who come to Mexico for business leave with the best possible impression.
“Unfortunately, the fewer mobility options there are, and the more attempts are made to prevent registered Uber app driver partners from making trips, the worse the image we project abroad will be,” he insisted. He stressed that the United States Department of State asks its citizens to use Uber as a mobility option once they arrive at a destination in Mexico. “The problem is not and has never been Uber. We will always be open to dialogue and to participating in improving the country’s mobility ecosystem. By banning platforms from airports, users are hurt, the national image is hurt, and we all lose,” he said. He regretted that vulnerable users such as mothers with small children, people with disabilities, or the elderly are forced to travel a road without facilities and with various risks to board an Uber when they are leaving an airport. “We have always called and will continue to call for a constructive dialogue. We reaffirm our commitment to the federal government to reach a result that benefits each and every one of those involved,” he said. Eiroa said that the mobility platform is open to receiving taxi drivers who have their sites at the airport. “They can always benefit from our technology. We offer everyone who drives a taxi-type vehicle the possibility of registering in the application, from the ease of controlling their earnings to the more than 40 security functions. We ask them to try it and see the earnings they get. They will also notice that downtime is reduced,” he said.
