The UAE has affirmed its commitment to supporting international and regional efforts to reduce the effects of natural disasters, take proactive measures to reduce their effects, support national capabilities, enhance collective response, and encourage innovation of new solutions, in addition to the necessity of working with all partners to provide the necessary support and assistance to affected communities.
The UAE said yesterday, in a statement delivered by Reem Al-Halmani, member of the UAE’s mission to the United Nations regarding the protection of people in disaster situations: “In recent years, we have witnessed a noticeable increase in the frequency and severity of natural disasters, including earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, and forest fires.”
The statement added: “These disasters do not recognize borders and their effects are not limited to a specific region, which requires collective efforts to address them. Therefore, international cooperation and adherence to international law and norms to protect individuals and strengthen the legal framework have become an urgent necessity, by defining the responsibilities of states and developing proactive policies that are consistent with these measures.” standards and ensure an effective response to these disasters.”
He continued, as climate-related disasters continue to impact humans, we must redouble our efforts to reduce the temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius and make it achievable in order to reduce the risks of these disasters.
The statement added that the historic “UAE Agreement” to address the repercussions of climate change reflects our common will to prevent the global temperature from rising and exceeding the threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius, and to activate the “Loss and Damage” Fund to compensate the countries most affected by climate change.
He stressed that to confront this remarkable rise in the frequency of disasters related to climate change, countries should take more ambitious measures during the next round of nationally and internationally determined contributions.
The statement said: “The UAE believes in the importance of supporting national capabilities in responding to disasters, and the necessity of strengthening collective response and international cooperation in a way that takes into account responding to women’s perspectives.
