The United Arab Emirates affirmed its support for all efforts to achieve peace and stability in Haiti, welcoming the renewal of the mandate of the United Nations Integrated Office. This came while the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution calling for an end to providing weapons to gangs in Haiti.
In a tweet published by the official account of the Permanent Mission of the United Arab Emirates to the United Nations in New York on Twitter, the UAE welcomed the renewal of the mandate of the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti, stressing its full support for the office and its efforts in helping Haiti to achieve peace and stability.
Yesterday evening, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution prepared by the United States and Mexico calling on the member states of the organization to prevent the transfer of light weapons to the gangs deployed in Haiti, but without going to the extent of imposing a ban, contrary to what China has strongly demanded this week. The text calls on “Member states to prohibit the transfer of light and small-caliber weapons and ammunition to non-state actors that engage in or support gang violence, criminal activities or human rights abuses in Haiti.” China, which called for a ban on small arms in Haiti, considered this decision a warning to the gangs. After the vote, the Chinese ambassador to the United Nations, Zhang Jun, said that individual sanctions could be imposed within 90 days under the resolution against the leaders of these gangs. He added that the text “could have been better, but it is a good step in the right direction.”
