The UAE confirmed that achieving justice for the victims of the crimes of the terrorist organization ISIS is pivotal in the field of combating and eliminating terrorism, in addition to sending a clear message to terrorists around the world that the international community is determined to hold them accountable for their heinous crimes.
From this point of view, the UAE, in a statement before the UN Security Council on the team investigating ISIS crimes in Iraq “UNITAD”, praised the team’s important efforts in enhancing ISIS accountability for their crimes, especially by completing the initial report to assess the issue related to the development and use of chemical and biological weapons from the United Arab Emirates. Before ISIS, as well as investigations related to the financing of their terrorist crimes. In the statement, made by Ambassador Muhammad Abu Shehab, Deputy Permanent Representative of the State to the United Nations, the UAE stressed the need for the UNITAD team to continue to investigate ISIS crimes against local communities, including the Yazidis, and to complete searches for mass graves in Sinjar, Tal Afar and others. He praised the efforts of the UNITAD team in providing expertise and technical support to Iraq, including providing the government with an advanced laboratory information management system (LIMS), which allows DNA matching to identify the identities of victims, stressing the important role of the team in digitizing and archiving evidence available in Iraqi courts to preserve it. from damage. According to Boushehab, the UAE also commends the team’s use of advanced technology and applications such as “Zeteo”, which has made significant improvements to the team’s ability to identify the identities of the perpetrators of terrorist crimes, and urges the further development of these methods that can be imitated in investigations related to similar crimes in regions It also emphasizes the important role that technology plays in maintaining international peace and security. He stated that the UAE attaches special importance to the work carried out by the unit assigned by the team to investigate crimes committed against women and children, including crimes of sexual and gender-based violence, including cooperation with private bodies to provide psychological support to victims, as the state was keen to support this unit. By providing half a million dollars, based on its belief in the importance of adopting a women-friendly approach during investigations into ISIS crimes.
Boushehab said: “Providing support to the victims also includes restoring and building the ancient cultural heritage that ISIS sought to destroy in order to completely erase the identity and history of Iraqi societies, as their crimes affected historical and sacred sites such as the Al-Tahra and Al-Sa’a churches and Al-Nuri Mosque in Mosul.”
The UAE is currently contributing to rebuilding these three landmarks, in cooperation with UNESCO, within the framework of international efforts within the “Revive the Spirit of Mosul” initiative. The UAE praised the Iraqi people’s adherence to their diverse history and heritage and their resistance to attempts to obliterate the identity they were subjected to.
She stressed the need to continue working with international partners to ensure the defeat of the terrorist organization, prevent the spread of its violent ideas wherever they exist, and bring those belonging to this terrorist organization to justice, to hold them accountable for their crimes against innocents.
At the conclusion of the statement, Boushehab expressed the UAE’s welcome to the UNITAD team’s joining the United Nations Global Compact for Counter-Terrorism Coordination, stressing its keenness to enhance cooperation with the team and support it in performing its tasks effectively.
