Since the start of the pandemic in the US, math and reading achievement rates for elementary school students have fallen to record low levels, according to a study. The Nation’s Report Cardpublished September 1st.
“Among students aged nine, the average reading score in 2022 was down five points from 2020, and seven points in math,” the study says.
The report notes that the decline in reading achievement in the country is the most significant since 1990. In addition, for the first time in history, a drop in the indicator in mathematics was recorded.
“Clearly, COVID-19 has been a shock to American education and slowed academic growth in this age group,” National Center for Education Statistics Commissioner Peggy Carr was quoted as saying. The Washington Post.
The publication noted that these studies will cause new discussions about the feasibility of distance learning and the soonest return of the country’s schools to the full-time format of lessons.
In October 2021, Alexander Morozov, a teacher at the Higher School of Economics Lyceum, Ph.D. in History, assessing distance learning in Russian schools, noted that the transition to this format of study leads to an improvement in the quality of education for about 15% of schoolchildren.
At the same time, the expert believes that distance learning worsens the quality of education for other students. “First of all, because the vast majority learn under pressure, and it is almost impossible to control the assimilation of material at a distance,” he said. Morozov added that effective control can only be organized in the classroom, and most children lack self-discipline for distance learning.
