The accident occurred around 7 p.m. when a 44-year-old woman ran two red lights and lost control of her car. The driver, who according to the police is from Brazil, first hit the two German schoolgirls and then other pedestrians. The vehicle only came to a stop after it had crashed into several parked cars.
The two teenagers died at the scene of the accident. A total of seven people were injured, including the driver. According to Mayor Marcello Pierucci, one of the injured people, a woman aged around 60, is in critical condition and was taken to a hospital in Pisa by helicopter. The other injured were taken to hospitals in Massa and the Versilia region.
