lawsuit / videoMees T., Sanil B. and Hein B., the three main suspects of (among other things) kicking Carlo Heuvelman to death on Mallorca, remain in prison. The Lelystad court still sees too many serious objections to suspend their pre-trial detention. Two other suspects, Daan van S. and Kaan B., who are suspected of attempted murder, may await the continuation of the case in freedom from tomorrow.

Daan and Kaan are not suspected of murder on Carlo, but of attempted murder of other victims. Under certain conditions, they can go home from tomorrow, after having been in jail for months. One of the conditions is that they are not allowed to have contact with other witnesses and suspects.
The Lelystad court decided this today during the first not yet substantive hearing about the violence on 14 July in Mallorca, in which Carlo Heuvelman from Waddinxveen died.
Sanil B., Hein B. and Mees T. denied in court today that they touched Carlo. They admit that they hit one or more other victims.
As if a vase breaks
Lawyer Peter Plasman of Sanil B. said today that there are eight witnesses who say that Carlo fell backwards hard after a blow and that it seems that he died as a result. According to Plasman, there is more abuse that resulted in death than manslaughter.
To support that, Plasman read some testimonials about Carlo’s fall on his head: ,,It was a very bad sound, really like I heard something break… Almost like a vase breaking… I saw him fall backwards like that. on his head, really as if an apple broke… I heard a very loud tap, I saw how he landed, that was not good… I just looked at Carlo, I saw how he fell, then he was out. ..”
Plasman told this site before that there are witnesses describing Carlo’s fall to the curb.
We spoke to reporter Victor Schildkamp about the matter this afternoon. Watch the video below.
Sanil said that everything that happened should not have happened. “We were there for a nice holiday, because of something small it got out of hand.” Sanil does not deny that he kicked other victims, but he does deny that it was against the head. He didn’t kick or hit Carlo, he says. “I have nothing to do with Carlo.” But he cannot explain how Carlo’s DNA ended up on his shoe.
According to Hein B., the witness statements in the file are not well written. Hein does admit that he ‘kicked someone who was on the ground’. But later he found out that it was not Carlo, but a friend of Carlo. “I hit him on the upper body.” That friend can be seen on a video that was distributed via GeenStijl. In any case, it shows that Sanil hands out a shovel.
What happened to Carlo was behind my back
Mees T. says that he ‘has no idea’ who kicked Carlo. “That happened behind my back.” He also admits that he hit a friend of Carlo’s. Mees was one of the boys from the group of friends who decided that the group had to go home a day earlier, for fear of being arrested in Spain. According to his lawyer, Mees knew he had made a mistake and wanted to speak to his parents quickly.
The probation service is concerned at Mees about the chance of repetition. He is said to have ‘an easy attitude to violence’. He himself says that he is ‘loyal to his friends and stands up for it when necessary, but preferably with words’.

No video footage of Carlo
The Public Prosecution Service has not yet found any images of Carlo’s fatal abuse. Justice has already heard more than 60 witnesses and images and new witnesses are still being sought.
Fuss about drink bills seems to be the reason that Carlo’s group of friends and the suspects from Hilversum were raised and had a fight with each other. A friend of Carlo’s was angry about a bill and slammed against shutters. The suspects from Hilversum and the surrounding area had just had a fuss about a bill in another pub and had already ended up in a fight. Then they collided with Carlo’s group. Somewhere something was said or called and then it went wrong.
Today, during this first non-substantive session, it was mainly about the question of whether the men, who were arrested one by one in the Netherlands in the weeks after the fatal incident, should remain in pre-trial detention. Three of the five suspects are therefore suspected of fatal blows or kicks to Heuvelman. All five boys are also suspected of attempted murder of one or two other victims.
The suspects were part of a group of thirteen men who went on holiday in Mallorca in July. In addition to the five suspects who appeared today, three more young men from the Hilversum group are in the picture as suspects. One of them, Lucas O., is also suspected of attempted manslaughter, but – against the wishes of the Public Prosecution Service – did not have to remain in pre-trial detention. The seventh and eighth suspects, Stan F. and Lars van den H., are ‘only’ suspected of open violence. Their cases will be heard later.
