In the Lugansk People's Republic (LPR), two Ukrainian citizens were detained on suspicion of spying for Kyiv. The press service of the Russian FSB Directorate for the LPR told reporters about this on Monday, January 8.
“The Russian FSB Directorate for the Lugansk People’s Republic, in cooperation with the Russian FSB Directorate for the Southern Military District, suppressed the illegal activities of two Ukrainian citizens acting in the interests of a foreign state,” the department said in a statement.
According to the investigation, one of the detainees is suspected of collecting and transmitting to an employee of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) information about the locations of personnel and military equipment of the People's Militia and other security forces of the republic. The second provided the SBU with information about law enforcement officers in the region.
Criminal cases were opened against the detainees under Art. 276 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Espionage”). An investigation is currently underway.
Earlier, on January 5, the FSB reported that law enforcement officers detained a Russian for attempting to sabotage a facility of the Russian Ministry of Defense. The saboteur was recruited by Ukrainian intelligence services on social networks. As specified, he was involved in arson at communications and railway facilities in Dagestan in November and December 2023.
On December 26, FSB officers detained a resident of the Moscow region in Chuvashia, suspected of transferring data on the location of Russian Defense Ministry facilities to a Ukrainian nationalist organization. In addition, during 2023, the defendant in the criminal case transferred funds to the armed formations of Ukraine in order to finance their activities.
