Frankfurt / Main – A man is said to have raced over a pedestrian crossing at around 100 kilometers per hour and killed two passers-by – the trial began on Tuesday because of the crime in Frankfurt. The public prosecutor’s office applied for the 39-year-old to be placed in a psychiatric ward. The background is a schizophrenic illness of the accused, which makes him incapable of guilt.
In the accident on February 13 in the Sachsenhausen district, two men, aged 31 and 49, were so seriously injured that they died shortly afterwards. A woman with a toddler got away with the horror. The driver then lost control of his vehicle, which overturned and remained on the roof. The driver was seriously injured, but tried to flee anyway.
Witnesses held the man until the police arrived. After his arrest, he told of “inner voices” that had ordered him to go fast. He was then temporarily placed in a psychiatric clinic.
On the first day of the hearing, only the prosecution’s application was read out. The accused has not yet commented on the double manslaughter charge because his defense attorney was unable to attend and had only sent one representative. The jury chamber has initially scheduled five more trial days until the end of November. The focus of the taking of evidence will be the psychiatric expert’s report. (dpa)
