Three shootings in the last week. Two minors lost their lives and nine people were injured in an incident reported in Pennsylvania. The local police, who have not yet found those responsible, investigate the crime. This comes just hours after a shooting broke out at a shopping mall in South Carolina and in the same week a man opened fire on a New York subway.
At 12:30 a.m. this Sunday, April 17, a shooting occurred during a party held at a short-term rental property in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Among the more than 200 guests, most were minors.
According to local police, 11 people were taken to hospital, where two male minors died of gunshot wounds. Authorities have not yet released the names of the victims. Others suffered injuries, including broken bones, after jumping out of windows in an attempt to escape.
Police sources estimate that in the shooting there were about 50 shots inside the house and several more outside. Pittsburgh Police Commander John Fisher said shell casings from rifles and pistols were found at the scene.
According to the authorities, the evidence suggests that there were several shooters and that the incident was the result of an altercation between those attending the party. “We are going to do everything possible to catch those responsible,” police said.
Authorities still have no suspects.
Police did not report any arrests related to the shooting, although they explained that a mobile unit is investigating several crime scenes and interviewing witnesses. Agents process evidence at up to eight locations, spread out for a few blocks around the crime scene.
The Pittsburgh shooting is one of the violent events reported in the last week in the United States. Hours earlier, another shooting occurred at a South Carolina shopping center, leaving multiple people injured.
It also comes days after a gunman opened fire on a New York subway car, injuring more than 20 people.
According to a study by the Gun Violence Archive, 12,506 people have been killed or died from unintentional gunshot wounds so far this year in the United States. In addition, some 10,051 injuries have been recorded in incidents with weapons within this same period.
