Two fine melons on Japan’s northern main island of Hokkaido fetched 3 million yen ($23,550) in the first auction of the year on Thursday.
The highest number achieved by such an auction for a pair of Yubari melons, a distinctive product of Yubari City, was 5 million yen in 2019.
The winning bid in last year’s first auction was 2.7 million yen, according to Kyodo News.
This year’s successful presenter was Hokuyubak, a Yubari-based company that sells and packages fruits and vegetables. The company plans to hold a free cantaloupe tasting event including pair on June 4-5 in Yubari.
Kiyomichi Noda, the company’s president, said the melon’s unique taste makes it “worth” the price.
A total of 2,721 melons were sold at auction on Thursday. Excellent fruit often fetches very high prices at the first auctions in Japan, where buyers use successful bids for promotional purposes.
