Two people were killed and six injured in a shooting in the parking lot of a banquet hall where two weddings took place in the Canadian capital of Ottawa on Saturday night. That has been announced by the police. Nothing is yet clear about the motive.
Two men, ages 26 and 29, both from Toronto, were killed in the shooting, Ottawa police said. Americans were among the six injured, police said. Their condition has not been released, but their lives are not in danger.
The shooting occurred at about 10:30 p.m. local time in the parking lot of a convention center in the south of the city, where two separate wedding receptions were being held simultaneously. Bystanders said they heard 20 to 25 shots.
“The violence is sad, unacceptable and a shock to the entire community,” Amy Bond of the Ottawa Police Department said at a news conference. The cause of the shooting is under investigation. “There is no indication yet that this is a hate crime,” the police said. No arrests have yet been made.
Gun violence has increased significantly in several Canadian cities in recent years, according to the Canadian government. Since 2009, the number of violent crimes involving firearms has increased by 81 percent.
