The Vice Minister of Public Security, Martín Arias, explained that Costa Rica “relied on the support of US aircraft and vessels in the logistics part, which joined the Coast Guard vessels in the actions to capture the suspicious boat.”
The crew members of the suspicious boat were identified as two Costa Ricans with the surnames Quesada and Paniagua, both from the province of Limón (Caribbean), who were traveling together with two Colombians with the surnames Cuero and Taylor, who were placed under the orders of the authorities.

The boat was stopped more than 250 kilometers from Punta Burica, in the South Pacific, on Monday. However, it was not until this Tuesday that the evidence and the detainees were taken to the port of Golfito.
“It is a speedboat that does not have a name, license plate, or flag (…) the alleged drug traffickers, upon noticing the police presence, they threw the drug into the sea, for which the crews of the Coast Guard boats managed to recover nearly two tons of marijuana and cocaine“, indicated in the press release the Ministry of Security.
The suspects were presented to the Public Ministry for the crime of drug trafficking, which is punishable in Costa Rica with up to 20 years in prison.

Costa Rica is considered a drug transit site, but also a storage site, operations in which Costa Ricans usually participate in alliance with foreign groups.
Data from the Costa Rican Ministry of Security indicate that in 2021 drug seizures amounted to 71 tonsmostly cocaine, and that 35 drug trafficking organizations with international ramifications were also dismantled.
