Vaccines against the coronavirus work. The clearest proof is that unvaccinated people between the ages of 60 and 80 have a 25 times higher risk of death from covid than those with the full schedule. In addition, with about 80% of the population immunized, the incidence in people who have not received the puncture against the coronavirus almost triples that registered among people protected by vaccination.
The Ministry of Health revealed for the first time this Tuesday an accurate portrait of the difference between how the covid affects the vaccinated and the unvaccinated in Spain. These data attracted a lot of attention on social networks, especially through graphics illustrating the protection of those immunized and those who have not received the puncture. One of the most shared and replicated on Twitter was posted by the journalist Eduardo Suárez. This graph shows the same figures.
Last week, another piece of information emerged that reinforces the effectiveness of vaccines. 60% of those admitted to the ICU for coronavirus are people who have not been vaccinated. This figure led many people to point to the other 40%, indicating that it seemed a very high number to them. What is obvious from this analysis is that there are many more vaccinated people (almost 80% of the population) than unvaccinated, so the 60% of those not immunized fall into a much smaller group of people. This is best understood at a glance at a graph, like the one shared by Belgian journalist Noël Slangen on November 19. Since then he has accumulated more than 5,500 retweets. The graph that heads this information is prepared in a similar way, but with specific data for Spain.
The Minister of Health insisted this Tuesday on the same message that her department has been launching: “Vaccinate, vaccinate and vaccinate is still the best way.” A Health study on the effectiveness of the vaccination campaign already confirmed that the reduction in the risk of hospitalization and death exceeds 90% in most age groups.
Spain is one of the European countries with a more successful vaccination campaign, with about eight out of every 10 inhabitants vaccinated, compared to 65% on average in the European Union.
