The true story of “Two against the ice”
“Two against the ice”, directed by the Danish filmmaker Peter Flinth and starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau opposite Joe Cole, is inspired by the book “Two against the ice”, written by the real Ejnar Mikkelsen. In fact, with some creative licenses involved, the Netflix film could be said to be a story faithful to its source of origin.
As we mentioned earlier, Captain Mikkelsen went on a suicide mission, along with a young mechanic named Iver Iversen. They both went looking for important documents that they would use to derail the idea that Greenland is owned by the United States.
On this trip they were accompanied by a group of dogs. However, the extreme conditions caused the death of some of the animals. According to the portal Screen Rant, the duo was forced to feed the remaining dogs with the meat of the lifeless bodies of the others.
In addition, men also had to resort to this ‘survival method’.

Differences between reality and fiction
The pages, according to what the aforementioned media commented, report that the dogs at one point had to face polar bears, but none was mutilated as was seen in the feature film.
On the other hand, a true fact is that Mikkelsen and Iversen were abandoned by their crew and on their way back they found a cabin. In the film, a bear tried to attack them, although the characters managed to scare it away.
In the author’s memoirs it is said that when the furry animal found them, the mechanic used a gun to kill him.
After their tragic and traumatic experience, the two explorers were rescued after spending two years in their icy isolation. Although in the Netflix tape it puts the other members of the crew as part of the rescue mission, in real life, the Danish government was against it to avoid more deaths.
Despite everything, Netflix’s “Two Against the Ice” included minor changes in the plot in order to give dramatic touches and still sought to capture the closest thing to reality.
