Twitter announced on Monday that will add a warning in messages that share links and news from media affiliated with the Russian Governmentof which it will also try to reduce its circulation on the platform.
The measure is imposed after the European Union has proposed to ban the broadcast of media accused of spreading Russian propaganda, such as the RT channel and the Sputnik agency.
“We will add labels to tweets that share links to Russian state-affiliated media websites and take steps to significantly reduce the circulation of this content on Twitter,” said Yoel Roth, chief integrity officer for the platform.
According to Roth, since the invasion of Ukraine began last Thursday, More than 45,000 tweets a day have been spread with links to Russian state media.
“Our product should make it easy to understand who is behind the content you see and what their motivations and intentions are,” he added.
Since former US President Donald Trump (2017-2021) refused to accept the results of the presidential elections, Twitter began a protocol to point out messages with manipulated or false information, in addition to other sources with government interests, especially in conflict situations.
For its part, Twitter’s security department last week published a guide in English and Ukrainian that gives advice on making user accounts private or deleting previous messages in case of possible retaliation.
Despite the fact that the Government of Vladimir Putin uses Twitter and other US platforms to spread its messages, the same social network has been blocked in Russian territory since the invasion of Ukraine began, in order to prevent the spread of its military actions, they reported. several journalists and the Netblocks organization.
