With a new official press release Twitch confirmed that the resounding data breach last week did not expose passwords and sensitive data of users.
For the uninitiated, on 6 October Twitch officially confirmed that it had suffered a data breach, with hackers who managed to obtain the source code of the site, information on some unannounced projects, data on the earnings of some collaborators and much more. , such as an alleged list of streamers who cannot be banned. At the time, the company said there were no clues suggesting login credentials were stolen, but that they would continue to investigate to be sure.
In today’s press release, October 15, the platform again claims that the incident is due to a change in the configuration of a server that allowed access to a hostile third party. Now that it has concluded its investigation, Twitch also officially confirms that passwords and sensitive data, such as full credit card numbers, have not been exposed, which should reassure users.
Below is the full release from Twitch:
“As we had already indicated, the incident arose from a change in the configuration of a server that allowed improper access to an unauthorized third party. Our team intervened to solve the configuration problem, thus ensuring the security of our systems.“
“Twitch passwords were not exposed. We are also confident that the systems where Twitch login credentials are stored, encrypted with bcrypt, have not been hacked, as well as full credit card numbers or banking or Direct Credit / ACH information.“
“The data exposed contained mainly documents from the Twitch source code archive, as well as a subset of the payment data from authors and authors. We have carefully examined the information included in the exposed files and we are confident that only a small part of the users have been involved and that the impact for customers is minimal. We are contacting the people directly involved.“
“We take the protection of your data very seriously. We took action to make our service even safer and we apologize to the community.“
