A group of armed criminals with their faces covered invaded the TC TV channel, in the city of Guayaquil, Ecuador, this Tuesday (9). They took journalists and employees of the media outlet hostage and interrupted the live broadcast of a local news program.
According to information from the Argentine website Infobae and the newspaper El Universo, one of the criminals placed an explosive in front of a camera and forced a presenter to ask the police not to approach the scene. Then, the Argentine website states that shots and screams were heard inside the studio. One of the hostages was injured. According to Infobaethere are reports that some members of the police managed to enter the scene, however, the Ecuadorian police claim that they were still moving a team to the TV.
When hacking into the live broadcast, the criminals said they were acting on behalf of the “mafias”. The sad episode of violence occurs one day after the escape of the leader of the criminal faction Los Choneros, which took place this Monday (8).
According to information from the newspaper El Universo, the police limited access to Avenida de Las Américas and the streets close to the TV channel's facilities. According to the Infobaethe live broadcast was cut off on open TV, but continued on the internet.
Following the episode, the president of the Communication Council of Ecuador, Jeannine Cruz, said that she requested public security forces to monitor the country's media outlets.
