The state media in the Asian country announced on Monday that extraordinary elections will be held on March 12 to appoint a successor to the president.
The news also reported that the president himself has appointed his son Serdar Berdymuhamedovin candidate in the election.
Dictator Berdymuhamedov has ruled the country for the past 15 years. No challenger has yet expressed interest in challenging the president’s son.
The 64-year-old president said the decision to give up was a difficult one, but that the country needs “young leaders.”
Turkmenistan is a former Soviet republic with a large number of gas deposits, among other things. The country is considered one of the most closed states in the world.
