The House of Representatives reacted angrily. ‘Dictator Erdogan shows his true face again!’, tweets VVD MP Ruben Brekelmans. ‘Expelling ten ambassadors, what a ridiculous act and senseless escalation! The 10 countries must continue to form one front, then Erdogan will soon come back to this.’
Coalition partner D66 is also not pleased with the action. “A completely misplaced and exaggerated step by Turkey,” said MP Sjoerd Sjoerdsma. “The Netherlands has rightly pointed out that the European Court of Human Rights had already ruled that Kavala deserved his release. Deporting the Dutch ambassador, because he acted in line with the ruling of that Court, is absurd.”
GroenLinks MP Tom van der Lee calls it a ‘bizarre decision’ by Erdogan. ‘Treach basic human rights & due process and then explode when 10 ambassadors confront you about it?’ Appropriate response is needed.’ Kati Piri (PvdA) keeps it short but not to be misunderstood: ‘#FreeOsmanKavala’, she tweeted.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will provide a response later today.
