Werner Lorant is dead. The legendary coach of TSV 1860 Munich died on Easter Sunday at the age of 76 in a hospital in Wasserburg. The club announced this on Sunday.
Lorant was a coach of the lion from 1992 to 2001, the then President Karl-Heinz Wildmoser signed him. Lorant led the sixties to the Bundesliga within two years; The highlights were two derby victories against FC Bayern in the 1999/2000 season and participation in the Champions League qualification against Leeds United in 2000.
Lorant was popular with the Löwen fans because of his emotional way, he was responsible for the most successful time of the recent past at TSV 1860. “I was always against it, I said: Our home is Grünwalder Strasse – and not there.”
After his time in Giesing, he traveled through the world as a coach, took over jobs in Turkey, South Korea and Iran. In 2007 he returned to Munich as a trainer of SpVgg Unterhaching. Most recently he lived in Waging am See.
