Application was marked as “sub judice” until Monday (Oct 7); STF restored the former governor’s political rights
The TSE (Superior Electoral Court) confirmed, this Tuesday (8.Oct.2024), the victory of Luiz Fernando de Souza, known as Pezão (MDB-RJ), aged 69, in the election for the mayor of Piraí, in Middle Paraíba Region (RJ). Until Monday (Oct 7), your candidacy was classified as “under judiciary” node portal of the court.
Three days before the municipal elections, on Thursday (Oct 3), the minister of the STF (Supreme Federal Court), André Mendonça, decided to restore the political rights of the former governor of Rio de Janeiro. Pezão’s candidacy had been rejected by the TRE-RJ (Regional Electoral Court of Rio de Janeiro) on September 2.
Since his candidacy was challenged, Pezão had been seeking support from the courts to remain in the race. The rejection was based on a conviction for administrative improbity in 2019, related to the non-transfer of mandatory resources to the Department of Health during his term as governor. The court decision prevented his participation in new elections until 2027.
Pezão was removed from his position as governor of Rio in December 2018, after being arrested in the Lava Jato operation. He was convicted in 2019 by the TRE-RJ (Rio de Janeiro Regional Electoral Court) for abuse of political and economic power during his re-election campaign in 2014.
