Fachin signed a document in the US to allow international observers to act in this year’s election
The president of the TSE (Superior Electoral Court), Minister Edson Fachin, signed this Tuesday (5.Jul.2022) an agreement with the Secretary General of the OAS (Organization of American States), Luis Almagro, to carry out an observation mission of this year’s elections.
The partnership was signed in Washington, United States, where the entity’s headquarters are located. Fachin fulfills his schedule of appointments in the country during the week. With the agreement, the organization will send delegates to monitor the election in October.
The international mission is done independently. The entity’s delegates will be able to visit any polling station, in addition to being able to access the TSE and the electoral courts. This will be the 3rd participation of the OAS as an observer of the Brazilian elections. The entity was present in the 2018 and 2020 elections.
“In the same way as they did in 2018 and 2020, international observers will analyze the electronic voting system in depth, thus verifying its efficiency and transparency”, said the TSE in a statement.
The OAS also signed this Tuesday (July 5) a diplomatic immunity agreement with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to guarantee the independence of the observers’ work. Ambassador Otávio Brandelli, Brazil’s permanent representative to the OAS, signed the document.
“This is another one of those important moments, in which the Brazilian Electoral Justice promotes full freedom and autonomy so that the OAS can carry out its observation mission in the general elections of October this year”said Fachin.
“We are fully committed to transparency and dialogue. Our objective is to deepen the partnership between Brazil and the OAS in electoral matters and, therefore, to contribute to the improvement of this work in permanent construction that is democracy”declared.
