WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A US judge quizzed former US President Donald Trump’s lawyers on Thursday about his effort not to submit a series of Trump government documents to a US House of Representatives committee investigating the attack by a mob of former president supporters on the US Congress building on January 6th.
District Judge Tanya Chutkan is analyzing the Republican’s arguments that calls and visitor records and other materials requested by the committee, led by Democratic Party lawmakers, should remain confidential.
At the end of the two-hour hearing, Chutkan said he will issue a written decision “swiftly”.
“This is not just a monumental case, but one that will have consequences over time for generations,” said Justin Clark, a lawyer for Trump, in his opening remarks.
Clark said the committee’s requests are invalid because they are unrelated to any legislation being considered by Congress.
Chutkan expressed skepticism of the argument, saying that “the January 6 attack took place on Capitol Hill”, so Congress has an interest in investigating it.
The judge seemed particularly inclined to allow the committee to see records of White House visitors under Trump’s command in his final weeks in office.
“We are not talking about bank statements from before your client became president. We’re talking about documents that are quintessentially about government business,” she said, while acknowledging that some requests are “very broad” and may need to be limited.
