Former President of the United States Donald Trump (2017-2021) will be tried from March 25th for alleged irregular payments to porn actress Stormy Daniels, according to a judge in New York this Thursday (15th). The date will be dedicated exclusively to jury selection.
Judge Juan Merchan announced his decision in front of Trump himself, who went to the Manhattan court today to try, with his legal team, to get the judge to reject the charges – with the argument that it would interfere with the election campaign -, which was denied. The trial will last around six weeks, the magistrate confirmed.
Merchan explained to the former president's defense that he consulted judge Tanya Chutkan, who is expected to judge the case of alleged electoral interference against Trump in Washington, about possible date conflicts to coordinate the holding of the two trials.
However, the trial in Washington, which was originally scheduled for March, is suspended while the appeal presented by the Republican's legal team to have the case dismissed is decided.
Trump is accused of 34 crimes related to the US$130,000 (R$646,000) he paid to Stormy during the 2016 presidential campaign in order to cover up an affair they had ten years earlier, a payment that was hidden with the cooperation of his then attorney, Michael Cohen.
Trump faces a complicated trial schedule starting today: this Friday (16), another New York court is expected to hand down the final sentence in a civil case against the Trump Organization, which could cost him, among others things, the ban on operating in the real estate sector in the state where he has, for example, his famous Trump Tower.
He will next face federal charges in Florida for his handling of confidential documents after leaving office as president, as well as another case in Georgia over his attempts to overturn the election results.
