Trump orders to dismantle the Department of Education and puts the resources for the most vulnerable students at risk

It was one of the great campaign promises: close the education department. The president of the United States, Donald Trump, signed on Thursday an executive order in which he instructs the new secretary of the branch, Linda McMahon, to take the necessary measures to “start eliminating” the department. Actually, the Executive cannot close it – it needs to do it via parliamentary with a supermayoria – but can suffocate it. The main victims are going to be the most vulnerable students.

The press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, recognized in the morning to the media that the Executive alone cannot close the department and already advanced that a reduced version would manage “critical functions.” Among them, according to the White House spokeswoman, the Student Loan Program, the Pell Scholarships for Study, the Protection of Civil Rights and the main subsidies programs of the Title I and the Idea, which help to cover the cost of the education of students with disabilities. Together, these programs represent the vast majority of department’s activities.
