Trump, no immunity for the assault on Congress. The tycoon announces: “I will appeal to the Supreme Court”
Donald Trump is not immune to prosecution for alleged crimes committed during his presidency, to overturn the results of the 2020 election, including the assault on Capitol Hill. This was ruled by the federal appeals court in Washington. There judgment, CNN reports, represents a blow to Trump's defense in the federal election subversion case brought against him by special prosecutor Jack Smith. The former president had argued that the conduct Smith alleged was part of his official duties as president and therefore protected him from criminal liability. “For his criminal case – the three judges wrote in the document – former President Trump became citizen Trump, with all the guarantees of any other defendant”.
“But – they added – any immunity that could have protected him while he was president no longer protects him in this trial”.
“If proven, former President Trump's alleged attempts to stay in power despite missing class were an unprecedented assault on American institutions.”
Donald Trump will appeal to the federal Supreme Court in Washington against the decision of the Court of Appeal which denied him immunity from prosecution. This was stated by the spokesperson of the former president of the United States. The court gave the tycoon's lawyers until February 12 to file the appeal.
