Wisconsin, United States.– Former President and Republican candidate Donald Trump delivered a sombre speech at a rally in the US swing state of Wisconsin on Saturday as Democrat Kamala Harris prepares in Pennsylvania for next week’s presidential debate.
Trump and Harris are virtually tied in the polls, with the Republican enjoying the Teflon that keeps him in the race despite the mountain of scandals he carries behind him.
At the rally in Mosinee, Wisconsin, the former president unabashedly delivered his usual string of insults, exaggerations and falsehoods, and painted an apocalyptic portrait of the United States, a nation that he sees as run by a leftist dictatorship, “a regime of rogues.” On the Democratic side, the vice president took a break in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she is preparing for Tuesday’s debate with a different tone from her opponent.
“It’s time to turn the page on division. It’s time to unite our country, to chart a new path,” Harris said, acknowledging that she was “honored” by the recent endorsement of two prominent conservatives, former Vice President Dick Cheney and his daughter Liz Cheney, a former member of the House of Representatives.
Asked if she was ready to face Trump in the debate, Harris simply said: “Yes, I am.” The vice president landed in the presidential race after President Joe Biden abruptly withdrew on July 21, amid fears about his health and mental acuity. Despite the initial boost that this change gave to Democrats, Harris has had to step on the accelerator to present her profile and her ideas to voters. The Democrat has received criticism for the lack of details in her program, so Tuesday’s debate will give her a key opportunity to clearly state her policies and sharpen her lines of attack against Trump. Pennsylvania, where Harris is entrenched before the debate, is divided by a narrow margin between Republican and Democratic voters, and may be the decisive piece in the puzzle that must be put together state by state to define the US presidential election. Tuesday’s debate will be the first meeting between Harris and Trump. The Republican was supposed to meet her during Biden’s inauguration but declined to attend following her false claim that the 2020 election was stolen from him.
