Precisely on the day in which the Wall Street Journal publishes an interview with Itamar Ben Gvir, Minister of National Security in Benjamin Netanyahu's government, in which the exponent of the Israeli far right attacks Joe Biden and says that “if Trump were in power, the behavior of the United States would be completely different”the former American president repeats the accusation that Israel backed out at the last moment from the American operation in which Iranian general Qassem Soleimani was killed in Iraq in January 2020.
The occasion is an interview with Fox News. “When we took Soleimani, you know Israel was supposed to be with us. But two days before they said they couldn't do it anymore,” Trump complained. Already after the Hamas attack on October 7, the former president declared that he “never forgot that Bibi Netanyahu abandoned us”, referring to the killing of Soleimani.
A Senior Israeli security official confirmed that Netanyahu withdrew from the American operation at the last moment in which Soleimani was killed.
“The operation to assassinate Soleimani had been in preparation for several months. At the last moment Netanyahu changed his mind for fear of Iranian retaliation. There was a non-repeatable window of opportunity and Trump decided that if Netanyahu was afraid to do it, he would have done it. And that's what happened,” the senior official told Israeli broadcaster Channel 12. “Israel provided crucial information and the United States carried out the assassination,” he said.
