Pennsylvania, United States.- Former President Donald Trump accused his rival in the race for the White House, Vice President Kamala Harris, of misleading voters into believing that the Biden administration has been tough on illegal immigration and drugs at the border with Mexico.
A day after the Democratic presidential nominee attacked Trump for blaming him for the Republican Party’s failure to pass a border security initiative on Capitol Hill in February, the Republican candidate hit back by accusing her of being responsible for high numbers of illegal crossings.
“She’s the architect of the border invasion and now she’s trying to pretend she’s tough on border security,” Trump said during a rally in Harrisburg, the capital of Pennsylvania, the state where he suffered an attempt on his life just over two weeks ago.
During his rally, Trump reiterated accusations against Harris stemming from the announcement in early 2021 when President Joe Biden put her in charge of diplomacy with Mexico and Central America to address the causes of migration. Trump and Republicans have tried to label her the “Border Czar.”
“Now, she’s pretending that she was never made ‘Border Czar.’ But she was actually made ‘Border Czar’ from day one. But the reality is that she never went (to the border),” Trump told supporters in the key state of Pennsylvania, in response to Harris’ attack.
Republicans and Trump have tried to blame Harris for the record number of irregular migrant crossings recorded during Fiscal Year 2023, when US authorities registered around 2.5 million, which the Republican candidate has described as an invasion of the country.
“She’s never actually been to the border. And yet she is the Border Czar. This, at a time when our country is being overrun by people coming out of prisons and people coming out of mental institutions and terrorists (from abroad),” Trump said.
In a campaign twist, Harris launched a widely publicized strategy in Georgia to blame Trump for failing to follow through on his tough talk in favor of greater border security by inciting Capitol Hill to sink an initiative in February that would allocate $14 billion to the border.
Recently, data from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office (CBP) showed that the total number of irregular migrant crossings so far in the current Fiscal Year 2024 is only 1.3 million crossings.
Immigration and border issues are one of Trump’s main strengths in polls among American voters, with a survey by the AP agency and the NORC center at the University of Chicago recording 68 percent disapproval of President Biden in that area.
