Genoa – You will be heard as a witness on October 28th Carlo Pepi, Modigliani’s expert Tuscan art critic, in the trial in Genoa on the alleged false paintings exhibited at Palazzo Ducale in 2017. It was he, after a visitor was informed, who reported the presence of “suspicious” paintings at the event and initiated the investigations of the carabinieri and the prosecutor’s office. The paintings had been confiscated and the exhibition had closed early.
On trial, for fraud, forgery and counterfeiting of works, there are six people: Massimo Zelman, president of Mondo Mostre Skira, who organized the exhibition, Joseph Guttman, mediator based in New York and owner of many of the seized works, the curator of the exhibition Rudy Chiappini, Nicolò Sponzilli, exhibition director Skira, Rosa Fasan, employee Skira, Pietro Pedrazzini, Swiss sculptor, owner of a “Portrait of Chaim Soutine” which according to investigators he placed as authentic even though he knew it was false.
According to investigators, coordinated by the deputy prosecutor Paolo D’Ovidio, through the exhibition at the exhibition, the aim was to make fake works authentic in order to acquire a higher quotation and resell them at stellar prices on the centenary of Modi’s death. For the lawyers of the accused, however, the works are authentic.
