Trek to Yomi – Trailer
Fight adversity in Trek to Yomi
The trailer for a cinematic experience set in feudal Japan, coming to PS5 and PS4.
Hello PlayStation fans! My name is Leonard Menchiari and I am the creator of Trek to Yomi, coming to PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. As we approach the release, I would like to delve into the history and development of Trek to Yomi with you and reveal some subtle details that the Flying Wild Hog team helped bring me to life.
Trek to Yomi’s theme and plot are based on two fundamental pillars: the history of Japan and Shinto. The Shinto belief says that gods are everywhere, they live in every stone, tree or flower, therefore, part of our narrative delves deeply into this principle, and tells stories of Hiroki’s ancestor kami spirits, the various eras in which they lived, and the tragic, violent and unjust deaths that force them to endure a harrowing half-life in Yomi. Often, these stories reflect Hiroki’s journey and his doubts, and can help him make a decision about his own journey.
The original idea for Trek to Yomi came from watching Kurosawa’s films and experimenting with the black and white image in Unreal Engine. The cinematic experience we created is ultimately heavily influenced by classic Japanese films, such as the angles of the shots, or the duration or even the dialogue. The initial approach to 2d gameplay is inspired by the silent films of the 1920s and 1930s, where each scene is designed to look more like a magical mobile theater stage than a screen. We believe this makes Trek to Yomi stand out as something unique, and we also hope that people will want to see these movies once they finish playing!
Alec Meer and I wrote the story with the number seven as a reference, not only for its importance in cinema, but also for its relevance in Japanese folklore. So, notice how the number seven plays a significant role in Hiroki’s story.
Authenticity is of paramount importance to us, and everything has been carefully crafted following traditional Japanese culture, from religious beliefs, to how the sword is hung on the wall, or how the kimono is tied. The game’s incredible soundtrack is based on ancient materials from specific regions of Japan, inspired by the atmosphere we wanted to create and the feel we were meant to portray. Some of the instruments used in the recordings are extremely rare, and the musical scales are originals from the pre-Westernization period.
Still on this theme, by designing the maps of Hiroki’s cities and villages in the world, we wanted to bring back the true lifestyle and culture of the Japanese Edo period, including dojos, shrines, cemeteries, markets, restaurants and much more. Much of the material was inspired by Tokyo’s huge Edo museum exhibit, and we got a lot of help from Japanese experts to make sure we make consistent decisions.
But our attention to detail doesn’t stop there! Trek to Yomi has a well-defined geography, and the lighting sources and location of each shot are also chosen keeping in mind the direction of the light, the elements in the background, and the symbolic connection between sunrise and sunset.
We hope you are as excited as we are about the release of Trek to Yomi on PlayStation, and I would like to thank you for reading my article and perhaps understanding more about the game, the passion and the hard work involved in making it happen.
