The 35-year-old from Friuli wins the sprint over his escape companion. Third place for Tadej Pogacar. The Cuban Sierra scores among the women
The 100th edition of the Tre Valli Varesine goes to Alessandro De Marchi who in the two-man sprint beat the equally good Davide Formolo. The decisive action of the two Italians about ten kilometers from the conclusion, when they left the group of six fugitives they were part of. For Alessandro De Marchi it is the return to victory: he could not do it since the Giro dell’Emilia 2018, at least in an individual race as he had won gold in the mixed relay at the European Championship in Trento.
The 35-year-old from Friuli of the Israel Start-Up Nation had already spent two days in the pink jersey this season before a bad fall that forced him to leave the Giro. The third step of the podium was conquered by the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar. The race (starting from Busto Arsizio and arriving in Varese after 196.7 km) was experienced on the escape of Aurélien Paret-Peintre, Rigoberto Urán, Lorenzo Rota, Alessandro De Marchi, Andreas Kron, Nelson Oliveira and Davide Formolo. First Nibali and then Pogacar (who had Formolo in front of him) tried to return, but De Marchi and Formolo jumped at minus ten and reached the finish line with the Friulian prevailing in the sprint.
In the morning also the first edition of the Tre Valli Varesine for women (from Busto Arsizio to Varese, 92.4 km). The success went to Cuban Arlenis Sierra (AR Monex Women’s Pro Cycling) who beat Spain’s Mavi Garcia (Alé BTC Ljubljana) with Australian Rachel Neylan (Parkhotel Valkenburg) third. Italian first Barbara Malcotti (Valcar), fourth at 27 seconds.
