Court survey identified 93 regions in risk areas in Rio; this year, 53 locations were changed
The TRE-RJ (Regional Electoral Court of Rio de Janeiro) modified, in these elections, 53 voting locations in the State, for security reasons. The measure affects 171 thousand voters in ten municipalities. For the next elections, in 2026, the Rio de Janeiro electoral court plans to change another 40 locations.
“Our intelligence area, in partnership with the Military Police, carried out a survey that identified 93 voting locations, located in sensitive areas. These are places where the ballot boxes needed to arrive by armored car and strong police apparatus. A place where the ballot box needs to arrive in these conditions is certainly not safe for anyone.”stated the president of TRE-RJ, judge Henrique Carlos de Andrade Figueira.
According to Figueira, the 53 voting locations changed for security reasons were moved to areas close to voters’ homes. “Voters were moved to locations close to their homes. In general, the distance is no more than 1.5 km from the previous polling place”he explained.
According to a note released on Thursday (September 26, 2024) by the TRE, the Military Police will provide security and distribution of ballot boxes in the 4,974 voting locations in the State. In addition, military police will support electoral inspection actions.
The Municipal Guard will assist in 99 voting locations and provide traffic support. Military personnel from the 3 Armed Forces will operate in 32 cities, focusing on 500 voting locations and expressways.
