D.he British philosophy professor Kathleen Stock, who is being opposed for her criticism of the transactivist notion of gender identity, has resigned from her post at the University of Sussex. Masked students who accused them of transphobia had led a relentless campaign against them and after their resignation cheered with the song “Ding Dong, the Witch is Dead” from the film “The Wizard of Oz”. Stock spoke of an “absolutely terrible time” for her and her family, which she now wants to get over with. She expressed the hope that other institutions could learn lessons from her experiences in similar situations.
The University of Sussex regretted the resignation and stated that it had vigorously and unequivocally defended Stock’s right to academic freedom and freedom of speech in accordance with the law, precisely in terms of “equality, diversity and inclusivity. University Secretary of State Michelle Donelin called it “devastating” that the toxic environment made it unsustainable for Kathleen Stock to continue performing her duties in Sussex. No academic should ever fear for his or her personal safety.
Kathleen Stock, along with her colleagues Sophie Allen, Mary Leng, Jane Clare Jones, Rebecca Reilly-Cooper and Holly Lawford-Smith, is one of the protagonists of gender-critical feminism, which is revising the fundamental beliefs of the gender paradigm in an academic setting. The thinkers contradict the transactivist notion that there is an “innate gender identity” to which the biological gender has to be adapted without medical findings.
