Of all the sports coupes introduced by Toyota in the 1980s, it is precisely the least interesting on paper that has stuck with the mind the most. Or the Celica Supra you don’t hear that much anymore and the appreciation for the first generation MR2 is only now beginning to come for some. Many enthusiasts know the Toyota AE86 mainly from the drift scene, but well before that there was plenty of racing on circuits and rally courses with the small coupé. For example, a number of Corollas have had a tough life. Fortunately for these copies, Toyota is restarting parts production.
The Toyota Corolla of the AE86 series came as Levin with fixed headlights and as Trueno with flip-up headlights. The Toyota A86 was light, the front/rear weight distribution was almost 50/50, the drive went to the rear wheels, they were cheap and the four-cylinder was still quite spicy for that time. There was a time when the Corollas were very cheap, making them eager to use in the drift scene. A lot of copies were killed as the popularity increased. This resulted – together with a role in Initial D – for significant increases in prices.
The new parts for the Toyota AE86
That is why it pays nowadays not to use the Toyota AE86 as a drift rocket, but to pamper it as an old-timer. As of today, you can go to Toyota, or rather the GR Heritage Parts branch, for brand new parts. The brand starts the spare parts line with the rear brake calipers and the front steering knuckles. The drive shafts will be added in December. Toyota says they are only running a limited production. So be quick (enough).
