In just over a month, the 89th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and Toyota will certainly be one of the leading brands thanks to its commitment to endurance racing. After winning the first two races of the WEC, and waiting for the 6 hours of Monza, the Japanese manufacturer is favored for the overall victory: it is therefore worth going back to the moment in which its path was essentially ‘born’.
Toyota officially unveiled its road hypercar named GR Super Sport Concept at the Tokyo Auto Show on 12 January 2018. In retrospect, that launch provided the real ‘basis’ for the car currently racing in WEC 2021, namely the GR010 Hybrid with V6 3.5-liter Otto-cycle engine, equipped with a four-valve twin camshaft per cylinder, supercharged by two turbochargers, delivering a power of 680 horsepower.
Tesla Model S vs Benetton F1, past against future
That true concentrate of technology had partially inherited the abilities of the TS050 Hybrid which also participated in the world championship WEC and at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Signed by the Gazoo Racing department, the new born also confirmed the tendency to make its own some of the shapes of the two-seater that was competing on the track at the time. A transfer of concepts from racing to the road that anticipated the future strategy in this regard by the Japanese manufacturer.
So what was the first impression like? “It starts from the carbon fiber frame, also derived from competitions, up to the mechanics that includes the same engine as the aforementioned TS050 Hybrid. A 2400 cc V6 with two turbochargers is combined with an electric unit which allows the THS-R (Toyota Hybrid System-Racing) to reach an overall power of 986 horses. Toyota did not want to give many more details so as not to discover their cards. Among these i 18-inch wheels, equipped with Bridgestone competition tires (slick) and size 330/710. From the point of view of the layout of the body there are some similarities with the racing model, such as the covered cockpit and characterized by a rounded windshield“, I publish FormulaPassion.it.
The front is decidedly aggressive, with a large grille under the raised snout and equipped with the Toyota emblem. THE wheel arch they see the openings above the front ones, while the hindquarters always flow rounded towards a wing positioned rather low. Same goes for the dorsal fin, much smaller than that of the TS050 Hybrid. The sides are equipped with large openings that allow a glimpse of the section of the chassis and the front suspension, as well as generous dimensions is also the rear diffuser.
