The stop to the sale of diesel and petrol cars by 2040 wanted by some of the COP26 participants did not convince Toyota. The Japanese carmaker has indeed remained on the other side of the fence, along with Volkswagen and the Stellantis group, among others, convinced that electrification must be a gradual process. For the brand of the Rising Sun, in fact, electric is still not the right solution for some countries, with entire areas globally where a stop to internal combustion engine models would make no sense.
The Japanese brand immediately expressed its skepticism towards a forced transition, with President Akio Toyoda himself who repeatedly criticized the full electric and their exasperated promotion. Also on the occasion of COP26, Toyota wanted to reiterate its line by explaining the reasons for a non-accidental position. “We are ready to accelerate and help support with appropriate zero-emission vehicles. However, in many areas of the world such as Asia, Africa, the Middle East… an environment suitable for promoting zero-emission transport has not yet been created. We think it will take longer to make progress so it is difficult for us to commit ourselves to the joint declaration at this stage ”. This is the position of Toyota, explained in an interview with the international news agency Reuters. There is no absolute veto for electric cars and zero-emission mobility, of course, but a critical attitude oriented towards the needs and peculiarities of the markets.
