Toyota is certainly among the car manufacturers that have always been critical of electric power for the future of the car. CEO Akio on several occasions Toyoda he lashed out against policies that envisage electric power as the only solution for the vehicles of the future, a concept that the number one of the Japanese giant himself has reiterated also on the occasion of the inauguration of a bust dedicated to his father, Shoichiro Toyoda, at Nagoya University, in central Japan.
Toyota against electric only
“There are 5.5 million people involved in the automotive industry in Japan. Among these are those who have done engine-related jobs for a long time – Toyoda’s words taken from Reuters – If electric vehicles simply became the only choice, even for our suppliers, the jobs of all those people would be lost“.
Jobs at risk
At the moment, the strategy adopted by Toyota is proving to be a winner: As global EV sales slow, the Japanese giant is benefiting from demand for its expanding hybrid lineup, including in its core market, the United States. On the sidelines of previous statements, however, Toyoda himself admitted how I really liked petrol vehicles.
