The desire to get the best photography or be successful on social networks has led many to do unthinkable things, either because it goes beyond ‘common sense’ or because it puts the integrity of its protagonists at risk.
An investigation in which the Miguel Hernández University (UMH) of Elche (eastern Spain) participates reveals that between January 2008 and July 2021, at least 379 people died in the world as a result of a ‘selfie’which represents a death every 13 days.
The study, entitled ‘Deaths by selfies using an epidemiological intelligence tool (2008 to 2021): cross-sectional study’, points out that, after a brief hiatus due to the pandemic, deaths by ‘selfie’ have resurfaced strongly in the first seven months of the year, in which there have been 31 fatal accidents, as reported by the UMH on Wednesday.
Recently, a story may have ended up adding to the numbers in this study. It turns out that a 23-year-old American, who was out for a walk in the Vesuvius National Park last Saturday, deviated from the path set out for tourists to embark on a mission to get the ‘most epic selfie’.
The young man, along with three other relatives, took a path prohibited for visitors that took them to the top of Vesuvius. Over there, The young man tried to take a picture, but his cell phone fell into the crater.
Immediately, the young man tried to recover his mobile device, with such bad luck that he met the same fate. Fortunately, he was quickly rescued by the park guides, who were already on their way to the top when they saw that unauthorized personnel were there. The victim only suffered minor injuries and bruises on his legs, arms and back.
Regarding what happened, the president of the Vesuibio park, Paolo Capelli, pointed out that, with certainty, the park workers saved the person’s life with their prompt action. “You have to recognize the promptness and professionalism shown by the guides,” he noted.
The young man and his three relatives were denounced for trespassing on public land.
