The successes achieved in F1 by the Red Bull in recent years thanks to some of its drivers – not least, the new world champion Max Verstappen – have been made possible thanks to the previous and precious contribution ofAlphaTauri. The team from Faenza, formerly known as Toro Rosso, was in fact the launch pad in the Circus of various talents who were then transferred to Milton Keynes, all in the context of a technical and sporting collaboration between the two teams that did not equal in the top flight. The Italian team, heir to Minardi since 2006, still allows its drivers to accumulate experience in the Circus, so as to allow them to reach a certain level of maturity that can then lead to a great leap in Red Bull, where pressures and ambitions are inevitably greater. . In this sense, the examples of former AlphaTauri ‘converted’ to the Austrian house are absolutely not lacking: from Sebastian Vettel to Pierre Gasly – the only ones to have won with the Romagna team – passing through Ricciardo, Verstappen, Kvjat and Albon.
Yet, despite the particular role that this team plays, such as to be recognized as a sort of ‘little sister’ of Red Bull, the first to want to underline a particular condition was the team principal. Franz Tost. The 65-year-old, who has held this position since the foundation of the then Toro Rosso, has in fact stressed the need to participate in the world championships with only one rookie at a time, combining the latter with a more experienced driver. A circumstance perfectly represented in 2021, with Gasly in the role of the first guide and Tsunoda as a real rookie: “Nowadays, in Formula 1 – Tost explained – if you drive with two inexperienced pilots is a really complex challenge. It would mean finishing last in the constructors’ championship. There is no chance, with two young people, to find themselves in the medium-high ranking area, because the competition would be too high and too strong. If we focus on qualifying times, for example, the gaps from the top positions, for a young and inexperienced driver, would be tenths, not hundredths or thousandths. I think the combination of an experienced driver with a young and potentially strong one – he concluded – is the ideal one in AlphaTauri and is useful for the rookie to be able to accumulate experience in the most correct way “.
