Cell is one of the most beloved villains in dragon ball. However, whenever we talk about this character, we usually refer to the perfect form of him. However, on this occasion it is time to talk about his first appearance, the one that was not well received by Akira Toriyama’s editors due to its terrifying style.
In an interview, Toriyama revealed that he was very proud of his work, but Not everyone on his team shared his sentiment., especially Yuu Kondo, editor of the manga at the time, since his design was far from how pleasant Vegeta and Frieza were in their latest transformation. This is what Toriyama commented on the matter:
“Yes, I liked the first Cell, but Kondō-san told me: ‘It looks ugly. Of course, he can transform’, so I had no choice but to transform him into the second form of him. (…) I also liked Cell there, but they told me he looked stupid and I had to bring him to his perfect form.”
Everything seems to indicate that Cell’s transformations were not a 100% decision made by Toriyama., but a note from its editors. Without a doubt, it would have been interesting to see the first version of Cell throughout the entire arc in which he starred. On related topics, a new Dragon Ball game is leaked. Likewise, the release date of Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero.
Author’s Note:
It’s a shame Toriyama’s version didn’t come true. If the editors hadn’t asked for a design change, perhaps this beloved Dragon Ball arc would have been very different, something we can never know for sure.
