Almost always video game They are successful, their studies do not take long to give them their respective sequel. Most of the time these come to add more content, expand its mythology and give us everything we liked about the previous ones again.
Unfortunately, there are also sequels that seem to have only come to ruin a precious legacy. Thinking about them, we decided to make this Top 5 with what we consider to be the worst video game sequels.
The most disappointing video game sequels
5 – Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 killed one of the most promising video games in the galactic saga
The first Star Wars: The Force Unleashed fulfilled the promise of its title by putting us in control of Darth Vader’s apprentice who was very skilled in the use of the force. In addition to entertaining combat, it had a story that complements the original trilogy and some memorable scenes. Don’t you remember when we brought down a Star Destroyer with our bare hands?
However, its sequel, instead of giving us an improvement on everything we saw in the original, gave us what seems like a worse version of the original game, with repetitive combat, a meaningless story and very few hours of content. The good thing is that we already have the video games Star Wars Jedi to satisfy our desires to be powerful wielders of a lightsaber. But we’re still sorry they squandered the potential of this alternate history so badly.
4 – Halo 5
I’m sure many Halo fans will say that their most disappointing sequel was 4. But here we believe that this dishonor belongs to Guardians for several reasons. Halo 4 still maintained some of the DNA of the originals, added interesting mechanics and also quite striking graphics although it failed a bit in the story.
On the other hand, Halo 5 refused to innovate to play it safe with few changes to the gameplay. To put icing on the cake of disappointment, it gave us a campaign that feels rushed and even incomplete.. We also cannot forget that he deceived us with his advertising campaigns focused on Locke’s conflict with the Master Chief, when in the game they only have a small fight of a few minutes. That, friends, is false advertising.
3 – Dead Space 3 put these EA video games on ice, literally
EA at the time had some gems of survival horror video games with Dead Space 1 and 2. The first gave us a fairly immersive and terrifying science fiction experience while the second, although it went more towards action, still gave us an unforgettable odyssey for Isaac Clarke. Everything changed when the nation of Dead Space 3 attacked. In an attempt to compete with successful franchises like Call of Duty and Gears of War, this closing trilogy forgot everything that made this series great.
They said goodbye to closed and dark spaces to give us many frozen scenarios. The enemies now also included a rival militia, which got us into several firefights. Finally, it included a cooperative campaign which completely took away the little terror factor it had left. But we can’t forget the worst thing this game did: the microtransactions. If you wanted more powerful weapons you had to take out your credit card and pay. This is why EA left the series in limbo until its recent remake in 2023.
Fighting video games Marvel vs Capcom are among the best known and funniest in the field, so the announcement of Infinite It generated a lot of expectation among fans. If only they knew what awaited them. In an attempt to make it more accessible to casual players, they decided to remove several things. Among them the 3 vs 3 combat to focus on 2 vs 2.
Furthermore, to take advantage of the boom that the Marvel cinematic universe had They decided to focus only on characters that appeared in the series or movies, so their cast was very small. The purchase of Marvel by Disney meant that iconic characters from this series, such as Wolverine and Doctor Doom, were left out as there was a dispute over the rights.
What finally buried Marvel vs Capcom Infinite was his presentation. They went from a very striking and unique visual style in 3 to several eyesores that seemed to be made of plasticine. We are not surprised that very few bought it and even today we are waiting for a new sequel that corrects the path of the franchise.
1 – Resident Evil 6 was the one that finished making action video games for this beloved survival horror saga
For many fans, Resident Evil 4 It is both the jewel in the crown and the curse of the saga, Well, it was the delivery that began his descent towards a path of more action. Resident Evil 5 kept similar gameplay, added a co-op campaign, a lot more action, but overall remained pretty fun and passable. But when we talk about 6 is when we see that Capcom completely went crazy with this video game series.
To start, it gave us four different campaigns, which on paper sounds very ambitious but in execution left a lot to be desired. Chris’s campaign is practically Gears of Evil, Leon’s is perhaps the most redeemable with several moments of terror and some memories of the first installments; while Jake’s is a strange amalgam with everything and karatazos.
With resident Evil 6, Capcom wanted to do many things and the result is a rather irregular experience with many more cons than pros. Perhaps they should have focused on a single vision and the result would have been different. Not for nothing did they decide to take a totally different path with Resident Evil 7 and its recent remakes. They finally gave us terror again but with quite entertaining and modernized gameplay.
We know that there are many more video game sequels that were quite disappointing for their fans, but since a top 5 is not enough to include them all, we decided to go for the ones that hurt us the most. What did you think of our top? What other sequels disappointed you? Tell us in the comments.
