Always happens. When someone finds a magic formula for success, everyone wants to copy them to get their share of the enormous profit pie. We already saw this especially with Nintendo and its successful fighting game: Super Smash Bros which brought together several of its iconic characters to make them beat each other.
Since there are several games that tried to match or even end its success, we thought of making this Top 5 with the games that tried and failed to be the smash killer.
The games that tried and failed to be Smash Killers
5 – TMNT: Smash Up didn’t even bother not to copy the name
Now that the Ninja Turtles are back in fashion, perhaps it’s time to remember that they also wanted to copy Super Smash Bros. To begin with, they weren’t even subtle with their obvious inspiration from Nintendo’s success. From the name it is already obvious that they wanted to be compared to it and we don’t even talk about the gameplay.
Obviously it is a platform fighting game quite similar to that of Mario and his friends, with up to four players dealing blows left and right. But here we control the reptiles, as well as some of their villains and allies.
At its launch it had a rather mixed reception, although for turtle fans it could be a lot of fun. One reviewer at the time even said that what this game did best was make you want to put it down and start playing Super Smash Bros. That had to hurt.
4 – PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale
As always, PlayStation copying its father by releasing the game All-Stars Battle Royale. Although it doesn’t have Smash in the name, it’s also very obvious what they wanted to achieve. They also had several of their iconic characters in a fighting game. Some of them were Sly Cooper, Kratos, Nathan Drake, Ratchet and Clank, and Sweet Tooth.
What brought this game down the most was that its cast of characters was really very small and that also included multiplatform characters like Dante from Devil May Cry or Isaac Clarke from Dead Space. TOOther players and critics at the time did not like that the only way to knock out your enemies was to make a special attack and not simply knock them off the stage. The absence of a sequel already lets us see that he was not the Smash Killer he wanted to be.
3 – Multiversus was very close to being the definitive Smash Killer
Now that he’s back Multiversus We remember how close it was to becoming the smash killer or rather our favorite alternative now that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate stopped receiving content. For a moment it looked like she would make it. It featured several beloved characters from popular culture, colorful settings, and also managed to differentiate itself by focusing on 2 vs. 2 fights, which encouraged cooperation.
Unfortunately it seems that they couldn’t handle the fame and the success made them nervous, because they made a mistake on their first release and after having won the game award for best fighting game. After they made unlocking characters much more expensive and tedious in addition to adding not very flashy battle passes, Multiversus He said goodbye for a long time.
Although it’s back, we still have our reservations about giving it a chance again. Although at times it can be fun, we will never go away the fear that Warner will close it once again, taking hours and hours of our effort and of course our money.
2 – Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2
Before Warner tried to steal Smash’s throne, Nickelodeon had already come somewhat close with its first All-Star Brawl. But it was not until its sequel that Nintendo’s plumber felt the true terror. The gameplay is basically the same as Super Smash Bros. but takes advantage of many characters from the Nickelodeon cartoons that are loved by many people.
Its developers took into account the complaints of its predecessor to give us a much more polished sequel, with more characters, more settings and better graphics. If they continue to improve like this for All-Star Brawl 3, perhaps Nickelodeon will have a great gem on their hands.
Unfortunately it does not triumph over the Nintendo saga due to its performance. Despite how fun it is, it has quite a few technical problems.. Especially on Nintendo Switch and how are you going to beat the champion at home if you can’t run well there?
1 – Brawlhalla manages to surpass Smash in some aspects
Brawlhalla is a game that tried to do the same as Multiversus but in their case it has worked quite well. It is an attempt at Smash Killer that is also free to play. Those who download it have access to a series of fighters that rotate weekly.
If you like any of them, you can buy it to always have it unlocked either with real money or with the currency you can earn by playing and doing weekly challenges. Throughout its existence it has had famous guests, such as Ezio Auditore, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Hellboy, Po from Kung Fu Panda and many others, which demonstrates the interest of the public and at the same time of the brands.
Perhaps this is because it does not simply copy the gameplay of Smash, it also adds new features such as the ability to bounce off the walls in the stages, which makes the confrontations even more active. In fact, it already has more than 100 million players, so we could say that it is the best alternative so far for the Nintendo title. At least until the sequel arrives ultimate.
When making this list we realized that the Smash Killers evolved over time and perhaps very soon we will finally have the great champion who will be able to triumph over the great N. But what franchise could be so great for that? What did you think? our top? What other smash killers do you think we were missing? Tell us in the comments.
