The 2022 season will go down in history as one of the most revolutionary ever in terms of technical-regulatory changes, which will make the single-seaters completely different from the previous championship both from an aesthetic and performance point of view. With so many aspects in terms of interventions on the cars, even the checks by the FIA they will be more in-depth than in the past, precisely to ensure the regularity of the cars participating in the world championship as much as possible.
In order to do this, the Technical Director of the FIA, Nikolas Tombazisexplained in detail a new system high-tech that will be introduced to control the single-seaters: “We check the cars of all teams using the computer to ensure that they meet the geometric criteria – admitted the Greek engineer in a statement reported by the International Federation – and then we compare the digital data with an authentic and real check. The system consists of a laser tracker which detects the position of a device held by one of our tellers. We scan the surface by holding a sensor above the surface itself, or we check specific points on the car that are verified with the computer on the coordinates, and based on these measurements we can draw final conclusions. In this way – he added – two checks will be made: the basic parameters such as weight and width, in order to make sure that the machine is not too lowand a slightly more detailed one on the surface of the car, which also takes longer. Regarding this last control, we hope to be able to accelerate the times during the race weekends, but we are still gaining experience. The checks will be random, with a couple of cars selected for the weekend without the teams knowing about these checks, to promote some degree of compliance. Obviously, if a car does not turn out to be regular, we can individually choose a car to be scanned in order to obtain the information necessary to issue a judgment. So far the system has worked quite well – he concluded – although there is still a lot to learn, but a step in the right direction has been taken to improve our work skills ”.
